According to the Hindu calendar, Shivaratri occurs every month on the night of Chaturdashi Tithi (14th day), as per Hindu lunar calendar. Shivratri is known as the night of Lord Shiva. The Shivaratri occurring in the Hindu month of Magha, during Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), is known as Maha Shivratri.
According to the classical text Nirnaya Sindhu, the fast of Mahashivratri is observed a day before the Maha Shivratri night (night occurring during fourteenth lunar day). On this day, devotees keep all day fast, but one time meal during the day is allowed. They worship Lord Shiva at the night of Chaturdashi. Nirnaya Sindhu also states that the fast is followed throughout the Chaturdashi Tithi.
